Age 56. 1776 Commonwealth Avenue, Brighton (Boston), MA. Born 4/29/1886, in Russia. Died on 11/29/1942 (Sunday), at 2:30 a.m., at Boston City Hospital, burns and inhalation of smoke (death certificate). New England district manager, United Artists Corp., of New York, NY. Reportedly escaped alive (Holocaust!, by Grove author Paul Benzaquin), but died early on Sunday morning. "When Stern was found he was so badly charred that identification was difficult" (Variety magazine, 12/02/1942). Wife Anna, age 46, expired on December 5, also at City Hospital. Couple was attached to a party of 29 to honor actor Charles "Buck" Jones, age 50 (dead) seated at multiple tables on the main dining room raised rear terrace. Sixteen died, the largest loss of life in any single gathering. The Morning Herald, Gloversville & Johnstown, NY, 12/01/1942: "Charlie loved a good story, and would roar over a well-put joke. It is hard to realize that this big, bluff man...is now dead, victim of a horrible fire." Author Benzaquin (Holocaust!), of City Hospital: "Of those who expired after being put to bed...the second was Charles Stern..." (the first was patron and victim Charles Sheehan, age 15). "A check for $209, $162 in cash, keys, papers, a watch and a wallet belonging to Charles Stern...had been given to the wrong claimant by error. They were returned and then given to Samuel Stern of New York, the victim's brother" (The Boston Herald, 1/05/1943). To the U.S. in 1896. Married in 1915. Previously a district manager for United Artists in Chicago, IL, was relocated to Boston (with his wife) earlier in 1942. Was in the motion picture business for over 40 years. Surname (with his wife) was misreported "Stearns" (with an added "a" and also an "s" at the end) in some news accounts (correct on their death certificates and on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety list of casualties). Triple funeral services with those of party victims Mr. and Mrs. Paul and Rhea Baron, both age 35, were held the following Wednesday in New York City. "Burial of Stern, however, will be postponed, pending the outcome of Mrs. Stern's condition" (Motion Picture Daily, New York, NY, 12/02/1942). Late parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Blanche (Brooker) Stern. Burial with his wife at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, NY. Middle name Morris.
