Surname (with her husband) was misspelled "Abernathy" (with an "a" on the third syllable) on the final official Committee on Public Safety, City of Boston, Cocoanut Grove master casualties list, published in November 1943 (her first name was also misspelled, "Katherine" with a "K"). With her husband was one of 56 married couples present where both spouses died, including 22 pairs with minors, resulting in 43 children (under the age of 21) being orphaned (plus one minor child orphaned by the loss of her single widowed father, victim Edward "Israel" Loman, age 44). With her husband were two of three casualties from Virginia (also Ensign Henry Cake, U.S.N.R., age 26, a patron in a separate party). Was the first alphabetically of 490 individuals to succumb in the great disaster. Divorced parents Mr. and Mrs. William F., Jr., and Elsie W. (Garthright) Poat. Stepmother Mrs. Jacque F.
