Catherine L. "Kay" Murphy
(1918 - 1942)

Age 23. 85 Brent Street, Dorchester (Boston), MA. Born in 1918, Watertown, MA. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Staff librarian at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. Was known as "Kay." Attended the season-ending afternoon B.C./Holy Cross football game at Fenway Park with her escort Raymond Sullivan, age 34, M.I.T. senior, and his visiting mother, Mrs. Margaret Sullivan, age 56, both of Ansonia, CT, both dead. Her remains were located at Southern Mortuary, Boston. "Only her Simmons Class of 1940 ring was left to identify her" (The Boston Post, 11/30/1942). "A Boston College priest, the Rev. John E. Murphy...the girl's cousin, made the identification after he had trudged from one mortuary to another until he found the body..." (Dorchester Beacon, 12/04/1942). "Termed attractive by many, she was known to a large number of Technology students who frequent the Central Library..." (The Tech, M.I.T., 12/01/1942). Was stationed at the library circulation desk for the past two years, where Mr. Sullivan was also employed as a part-time assistant. Was single. One of two Grove casualties coincidentally named "Catherine Murphy" (also patron in another party, Catherine M. Murphy, age 33, of West Quincy, MA). Her mother on December 10 initiated a wrongful death suit for $10,000 against, "...Jennie (Janet) Welansky [Grove property co-owner and younger sister of club owner Barnett Welansky]...and seven insurance companies...and another suit for the same cause against the New Cocoanut Grove, Inc...." (The Boston Globe, 12/11/1942). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. "John" and Mary J. (Donovan) Murphy, same address. Burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury (Boston), MA. Middle name Louise.
