Age 25. 83 Sumner Avenue, Springfield, MA. Born 5/03/1917, Brooklyn, NY. Died of burns (death certificate). Housewife (death certificate). Known as "Betty Lee." Attended the club with her husband Gilbert, age 27, dead. Pair had left the western Bay State city of Springfield on Thursday to spend Thanksgiving with his family in Myricks (Berkley), MA, in the southeastern part of the state, then to visit her parents at the Hub suburb of Newton, MA. "Mrs. Winslow told friends that she was looking forward eagerly to the four-day vacation and especially to dining and dancing at the Cocoanut Grove" (Springfield Union, 11/30/1942). The couple was joined at the club by her parents earlier in the evening, but they safely left before the fire started. Her father visited mortuaries on Sunday and Monday without success, "...was sure he could recognize her by her excellent teeth and some bridge work" (The Boston Globe, 12/01/1942). Father believed the missing remains of his daughter were still possibly under debris and requested a new probe of ruins. "Firemen who had made many careful searches considered this unlikely but cheerfully went to work again" (The Boston Herald, 12/01/1942). Was already dead upon her arrival early Sunday morning at Mass General Hospital, but was misidentified under another name. Identity was confirmed by her father on Tuesday, who reported the body was stripped of a $350 engagement ring with marquis diamond and small stones. Was raised in East Orange, NJ. With her husband were two of four victims from the city of Springfield (also Lieut. William Langhammer, U.S. Army, and Conrad Schorling, both age 26, both patrons). Parents Mr. and Mrs. R. Franklin and Mabel Lee (Barnes) Moment. Burial with her husband in the Winslow family lot at Pine Hill Cemetery, Taunton, MA.
