Bernardo Fazioli
(1897 - 1942)

Age 45. 146 Hancock Street, Everett, MA. Born 6/21/1897, Papigno, Italy. Died on 11/29/1942 (Sunday), at 2:00 p.m., Boston City Hospital, burns and inhalation of smoke (death certificate). Arranger and violinist in Milton "Mickey" Alpert's Grove house band. Known as "Bernie." To Boston Police, 11/29/1942 (at Boston City Hospital): "I just walked out with the boys to start to do the show and somebody said, 'Look, there is fire.' I looked out in the lobby and saw a huge flame come...I started to suffocate." Recalled in 1992 by former Grove waiter John Rizzo (Born 1/18/1920. Died 9/20/2016, age 96. Last residence Lynn, MA), seeking his older brother Daniel, age 26 (Born 12/07/1915. Died 9/27/1974, age 58), also a waiter (injured), at City Hospital on Sunday: "I saw Bernie Fazioli from Everett. He said, 'Hi, Johnnie. Your brother's down four beds'" (The Boston Sunday Globe, 11/22/1992). Half an hour later heard a woman scream. Added: "They said it was Mrs. Fazioli, whose husband was dead...He just died from smoke he'd inhaled." Boston Sunday Advertiser, 12/06/1942: "Of all [entertainers] who died none will be more missed than gentle, sweet-faced, pleasant Bernie Fazioli..." Boston Italian News, 12/11/1942: "Bernie Fazioli...had escaped, but entered the burning building to save his $500 violin - and perished" (conflicts with other accounts). Wife former Rose I. Brophy, age 41 (Born 12/30/1900. Died 11/09/1963, age 62. Never remarried), not present. Married in 1921, in Everett. Survived by a daughter June Rose, age 17, and son Clive, age 15. Daughter wrote to the Boston Traveler, 12/18/1942: "My father was one of the unsung heroes of the Cocoanut Grove fire. He...made three trips into that burning building to save crowds of merry-makers..." Also: "The management...did not even bother to ask the whereabouts of the man who meant so much to the establishment..." To the U.S. in 1905. Member American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Was the only Grove house orchestra member present (of ten) to perish. One of two mortally injured victims to make police statements before passing (also patron Miss Priscilla White, age 27). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Rocco and Flora (Castagnoli) Fazioli. His mother died on 3/07/1943. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA.
