Bernard Leo Galligan
(1916 - 1942)

Age 26. 152 County Street, Attleboro, MA. Born 10/28/1916, in Attleboro. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Accountant in the Boston office of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. Known by his middle name Leo. First name Bernard. Present at a post-football-game main dining room party of 14 hosted by Mr. Ernest Bizzozero (dead) and his wife Marion (survived), both age 40, with his older cousin, Miss Mary Mulkern, age 37, also of Attleboro, nine dead including Miss Mulkern. "The football game between Boston College and Holy Cross Saturday afternoon was the attraction which drew Leo Galligan and Miss Mulkern to Boston together..." (Attleboro Sun, 11/30/1942). Pair attended a cocktail party at the Quincy, MA, home of the Bizzozeros before all reunited at the Grove. Bodies of both were reported as recovered directly at the scene. His remains were identified by relatives Sunday afternoon at Southern Mortuary, Boston. Initial confusion regarding his identity: "...when the name of Bernard L. Gilligan [sic], misspelled with an "I" instead of an "A" in the first syllable, was given out by authorities..." (Attleboro Sun, 11/30/1942). Was single. Was a graduate of Attleboro High School in 1934 ('34 The Blue Owl yearbook: "'Red' has been one of our smallest boys, yet he has been one of the most popular..."). Graduate of Boston University, College of Business Administration. Joined the above railway the past February, was previously employed at Evans Case Co. (metal novelties), North Attleborough, MA. At 5' 8½," 128 lbs. (WWII draft registration, October '40) ranked among the lightest of male victims. With his cousin were the lone Grove casualties from the Bristol County city of Attleboro. Parents Mrs. Julia F. (Dacy), same address, and the late Mr. Bernard P. Galligan. Interred at St. John's Cemetery, Attleboro, the same burial grounds as Miss Mulkern.
