"Mr. Broderick roomed in Newton during the week and this weekend was taking inventory at his place of business" (Worcester Telegram, Worcester, MA, 11/30/1942). Also: "He sent word to his family...that he would be so engaged and probably would attend some entertainment in Boston." The Evening Gazette, Worcester, MA, 11/30/1942: "It is believed he attended the Holy Cross - Boston College football game and later went to the Cocoanut Grove..." His body was identified by a brother-in-law (not present) at Mass General Hospital late Sunday night. His wife collapsed upon finding his jacket at Police Headquarters on December 4: "The coat...had been burned almost beyond recognition and she failed to take it with her" (The Boston Post, 12/05/1942). Was raised in Hopkinton and Westborough, MA. Survived by daughters Sheila, age 16, and Mary Deane, age 7. Wife former F. Deane Fee (Born 8/04/1899. Died 7/16/1986, Danvers, MA, age 86. Never remarried), married in 1924, in Westborough. Was the lone victim from the Middlesex County city of Marlborough. At 5' 10½," 270 lbs. (WWII draft registration, February '42) was the second-heaviest male present at the club when the blaze broke among those with WWII draft registrations (nearly all men present), also the second-heaviest male fire victim (both after bartender William "Bubbles" Shea, 300+ lbs.). His widow was interred with her late husband upon her July 1986 death. Middle name Charles.
