Age 23. 78 Tremont Street, Lynn, MA. Born (surname spelled "Morotta") on 11/08/1919, in Lynn. Died of burns (death certificate). Staff Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, based at the Marine Recruiting Station, Watertown, NY (lodging at 428 Washington Street, Watertown, NY). At the club with his wife Alice, age 20, dead. Pair had traveled to Boston on Friday for a 72-hour holiday leave. Couple was observed at the club (by an unnamed witness) as present with S/Sergt. James Kelley, U.S. Marine Corps, age 25, dead, seated at a main dining room table "just off the dance floor" (The Boston Post, 11/30/1942). "His body was found in the ruins and his wife is missing" (Boston Evening American, 11/30/1942). Was brought alive to Chelsea Naval Hospital but died soon after during treatment. Was identified by his clothing and a, "...wrist watch engraved 'Tony from Grandpa'" (First Naval District inquest transcript, 11/30/1942). Police on 1/05/1943 recovered $35 reported absent from his remains, still inside the pocket of his uniform which had been sent to a Lynn dry cleaner. Raised at the Lynn address above. Was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School in 1938. Enlisted in the Marine Corps on 8/13/1938. "He had traveled to South America, Cuba and Panama as a first-class private..." (The Boston Globe, 12/01/1942). Transferred (with his wife) from the Binghamton, NY, recruiting office to Watertown, NY, in November 1941. Appeared under the duplicate listing of "Anthony Mobato" [sic] on the working draft of the official Boston Committee on Public Safety casualties list (which survives), error was eliminated on the final 1943 published report. One of three Marine Corps victims lost (also Capt. Walter Goodpasture, Jr., age 25, and the above S/Sergt. Kelley). Parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Angelina (DiCarlo) Marotta (formerly "Morotta"). Burial with his wife at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA. Middle name Peter.
