Was home on Long Island visiting his parents as late as Saturday morning. Left New York at noon by train for Boston to join Miss Welch. Latter planned to attend the season-ending afternoon B.C. Eagles / Holy Cross Crusaders college football game at Fenway Park. Was unable to witness the contest but arranged to meet Miss Welch afterwards. Reported in the 11/30/1942 Syracuse Herald-Journal, Syracuse, NY, that Miss Welch had received a telegram from an unnamed "friend" enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard, asking her to go to the Grove. Teen couple ranked among the youngest known present in which both partners perished, a combined 34 years of age. Was single. Raised in Richmond Hill, NY. "At Richmond Hill High School he was an outstanding student and school leader, one of the most popular boys there" (Long Island Daily Press, Jamaica, L.I., NY, 11/30/1942).
