Ducey
Alice G. Ducey
(1912 - 1942)

Age 30. Lodged (with her husband) at 15 Pilgrim Road, North Weymouth (Weymouth), MA. Born on 1/04/1912, in Boston. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Occupation: "housework" (death certificate). Husband John, age 32, was among the first fire victims confirmed dead. Her remains were identified at Southern Mortuary on the following Monday. Until a short time prior the couple had resided in Medford, MA. Subject of an odd posthumous news story in June 1944. Her estranged mother (since remarried, as Mrs. Deltha W. Drew) requested that the corpse of her late daughter be exhumed in order to collect jewelry buried with the remains for resale. Valuables had been placed in the casket by the funeral director, but when the father offered to remove them at the wake by the mother's request, she replied it would "create a scene." At Norfolk County probate court: "Mrs. Mary Davis, a sister-in-law of the dead girl...stated that...Mrs. Ducey [the victim] had told her that her mother was dead and she (the witness) and others were quite surprised when Mrs. Drew appeared at the wake..." (Quincy Patriot Ledger, Quincy, MA, 6/07/1944). Also: "She stated...that the jewelry consisted of a diamond ring, a wedding ring, a wrist watch and a spring locket and it was all brown and looked as though it had been in oil or burned." Quincy Patriot Ledger, 6/07/1944: "Stating that he was not going to order...the body of the late Alice Ducey exhumed...Judge James F. Reynolds...also said that he was unable from the existing circumstances to determine which of the young couple died first." Was previously divorced (surname Hurwitz), first marriage ended in 1931. Married Mr. Ducey in 1934, in Boston. Survived by a son from her previous marriage, Robert, age 13 (living with his father). Divorced parents Mrs. Deltha W. (since remarried), and Mr. John P. Nagle. Burial with her fire victim husband at New Calvary Cemetery, Mattapan (Boston), MA. Middle name Gertrude.
