Age 18. 1911 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA. Born on 10/21/1924, in Philadelphia. Died of carbon monoxide poisoning (death certificate). Sophomore at Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA (residing at Cazemore Hall). At the club with Harvard College pre-law sophomore Herbert Arnold, Jr., age 18, of Hewlett, L.I., NY, dead. Was the first identified of four Wellesley College undergrad casualties (also Miss Sadie Fors, age 17, Miss Jacqueline Weiss, age 18, and Miss Margaret "Peg" Whitson, age 17, all died with their dates). Remains were tentatively identified at Southern Mortuary in Boston, on Sunday. Identity was verified by Miss Edith Adams, of Homestead House at Wellesley College, on Monday. Her father, medical director of the new Philadelphia Psychiatric Hospital, was made aware of the tragedy via a long-distance phone call from the father of the above Mr. Arnold: "The man asked the doctor if he had heard from his daughter" (Philadelphia Inquirer, 11/30/1942). UP wire article, 11/30/1942: "Wellesley College authorities told Dr. Winkleman [sic] his daughter was identified in Boston City Hospital from her name sewn on a slip. They said she had not burned, but died from suffocation en route to the hospital" (may be the origin of a much-repeated legend, never confirmed, that remains of the coeds were established by names on their underwear). Was single. Graduate of Friends Select School (Quaker coed prep school), Philadelphia, 1940, where she was yearbook editor and class valedictorian. Was to have represented Wellesley College the coming Tuesday on a national radio broadcast debate on the topic of choral speech. Was a lifelong Philadelphia resident. Surname was misspelled "Winkleman" ("l" before "e") in numerous sources including her death certificate and on the final official November 1943 Boston Committee on Public Safety list of casualties. One of seven citizens taken from Pennsylvania (also Ensign John Bauer, U.S.N.R., age 27, Miss Marie Louise Hollander, age 21, Miss Sydney McKenna, age 19, Miss Bernice Sussman, age 20, Ensign Scovel Swan, Jr., U.S.N.R., age 22, plus the above Miss Whitson), tied (with Alabama) for fourth-most from any state after Massachusetts (406 dead), New York (15) and New Hampshire (9).
